Dr Tan's Core Essentials — Module 1 · Brisbane 2027
The Recording Teaches the Points. The Room Teaches the Judgement.
Three days in Brisbane with Dr Eileen Han. She spent 15 years running Dr Richard Tan's clinic and treats 50–70 patients a day. You'll watch her work on live patients and see which system she reaches for, and what she does when the first treatment doesn't hold.
- Module 1 Core Essentials You are here
- Module 2 Point Prescriptions
- Module 3 Advanced Track
Why It Works in the Workshop
and Stops Working in Your Clinic
A patient walks in with shoulder pain they've carried for six months. You know the points — you've done a course, or watched the recording. You needle, and it eases by half and stalls. The point chart doesn't tell you which system to use for this person, or what to do when the first treatment only half-works. That isn't a gap in what you've learned. It's a judgement you only build by watching someone make it, on real patients, again and again.
You Know the Points. Choosing Between Them Is the Hard Part.
With five systems, imaging and mirroring, almost any presentation has several routes. Knowing which one to take first, for this patient, is the skill.
The First Treatment Half-Works. Then What?
Most training stops at the protocol. In clinic, the next decision is the one that keeps the patient.
A Video Can't Correct Your Needle
Depth, angle and the point that's half a cun off are the details that change what happens on the table. They are caught in the room, not on a screen.
The systems are the map. Judgement is knowing which road to take — and that is what these three days are built around.
Five Systems Means You Always
Have Somewhere to Go Next
Dr Tan built the Balance Method on the classical relationships between the meridians. Each of the five systems is a different relationship, so each one is a different route to the same problem. Holographic imaging and mirroring tell you where on that meridian to needle — usually far from the site of pain, with few needles. When one route only partly resolves the complaint, you don't start over. You move to the next system and keep chasing the result while the patient is still on the table.
Patient in restrictive clothing?
One system works through the feet alone.
Patient in a wheelchair?
Another works through the upper body.
Need to avoid their dominant side?
Treat from the opposite side.
Many teachers cover the points. What you can't get from a book is fifteen years of watching which system Dr Tan reached for, and why.

Meet Dr Eileen Han
In 1999 Dr Eileen Han became one of Dr Richard Tan's disciples. For the next 20 years she learned the Balance Method the traditional way, at his side. For 15 of those years she helped run his clinic, saw hundreds of his patients each week, and had every needle and every clinical decision corrected by him. She assisted at his seminars around the world, and after he passed she went on treating his patients.
Today she treats 50–70 patients a day using nothing but the Balance Method. Her qualification for teaching the judgement isn't a certificate. It's twenty years of patients: knowing what Dr Tan reached for, what he did when it didn't hold, and doing it herself every day since.
That's why the live demonstrations matter. You aren't watching a lecture about the method. You're watching someone use it the way she does fifty times a day.

One Version, as Dr Tan Practised It
The Balance Method was developed by Dr Richard Teh-Fu Tan over decades of practice. Today it's taught under many names. This training teaches it as he practised it in his own clinic.
Dr Richard Tan — Architect of the Balance Method
Born into a family of TCM doctors in 1950s Taiwan, Dr Richard Tan inherited and then systematised the classical relationships between meridians into what he eventually called the Balance Method — a complete framework for approaching a wide range of conditions through distal points using five interlocking systems, holographic imaging, and mirroring.
When Dr Tan brought this method to the United States and taught it worldwide, Acupuncturists found it gave them a reproducible way to approach chronic pain and complex presentations — not dependent on intuition, but on a system of relationships any trained Acupuncturist can apply.
Module 1 is the first of the three-module Core Essentials progression Dr Tan laid out. Dr Han teaches it in the order he taught it to her.
What You'll Be Able to Do on Monday
Three days of the framework, and of watching it used on real patients. You leave with both.
In Your Clinic
You choose the first system with a reason, not by habit. When a treatment half-works, you know the next move while the patient is still on the table. The cases you used to refer out become cases you can assess and plan.
For Your Practice
"How did you do that?" becomes a question you hear. Difficult cases become the ones colleagues send you.
For Your Confidence
You stop hoping a treatment works and start reading why it did, or didn't.
How the Three Days Are Structured
Each day pairs the framework with live patient demonstrations. You hear the reasoning, then watch it used.
